When land was conveyed in 1882 for a new church for the parishioners of Mickletown, it was intended that it be named St Mary Magdalene. The ecclesiastical separation from St Oswalds was finally approved in
1904 and the Rev. H Stanley Darbyshire was appointed as the first incumbent. The building erected for the misses Denison on Pinfold Lane known as Butts House was acquired as residence for the priest, the same
building was later to become the Top Club in 1948. A new residence was then obtained for the curate at 77, Savile Road. The upper floor of the Church Institute continued to be used on Sunday evenings
for services, this was to become the Methley Mineworkers Welfare Institute. In 1905 the erection of a corrugated iron construction commenced after fears about the ground strength for foundations for a brick
building were voiced.
This church was dedicated on the 3rd August, 1905 - it is not clear why the change of of name was made to St Margarets. My guess is that it was in respect to the Waterton Chapel at St Oswalds which is also dedicated to St Margaret.
St Margarets closed in 1982 and to dispose of items in the church, parishioners/villagers were invited to make tender bids. This writer I’m pleased to say, bid for, and obtained two small items.
